The Star Symbol

Short entry for Saturday, to filled my empty day which kinda frustrating. So, let's begin with something sweet, nice and memorable:

"Twinkle, twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky.."

I sang it right, right?

Stars, the sparkling light that illuminates the darkness, it becomes a common symbol, signifiers and divine presence. It also appears in sacred or secular tradition all over the world. Today, it becomes part of the song such as in Rihanna's Diamond, Hilton's Stars are Blind or Simply Red's Stars. I really lose count about those star songs. Besides, star becomes the adaptation of idolatry which is marvelous, charismatic and adored. We called it as SuperStar. It seems like star is more than celestial phenomenon or astrology/astronomy  roles. But still, the symbol of Star is connected with spiritual and physical.

Five-pointed Star

It is a common ideogram all over the world, used for military ascendancy, war and also the insignia of national flags. It is also the symbol of fame or 'stardom' in Western culture. Back to the old days, Five-pointed Star was the emblem of the Assyrian goddess Ishtar. Later, Ishtar goddess known as Isis, an Egyptian nature goddess or Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Five-pointed Star (do not confused with pentagram or pentacle) had been used in many national flags such as Algeria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Cape Verde, Chile, China, Curacao, Esperanto, EU, Ghana, Grenada, Liberia, Micronesia, New Zealand, North Korea, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Sao Tome, Singapore, Solomon Island, Somalia, Tunisia, Turkey and also Vietnam.



Pentagram

Pentagram is similar like Five-pointed Star but the differences are the five straight strokes in the middle of Pentagram. It was the ancient magical sign, the geometry knowledge, mathematical construction and the trigonometric values. The lines joining its five points known as Golden Mean or Divine proportion, which becomes the symbol of wholeness and perfection. In Christian tradition, it is a symbol of Alpha and Omega (the beginning and the end). In modern use, pentagram is featured in Morocco's flag and Ethiopian's flag.



Pentacle

The pentagram engraved on the disc known as the pentacle. In the Western tradition, pentacle can create a magic seal. The seal symbolized the occult power and was believed to be able to cause a natural disaster (earthquake), love inspiration. misfortunes, or cast spells, and also protection against evil. It is associated in witchcraft and also amulet, and widely used on tarot decks in Minor Arcana. According to Aleister Crowley, pentacle represents the understanding of devise symbol and the Universe.
